最近フェイクニュースというカタカナ語を聞くことが多くなりました。fake には「偽の、インチキの」の意味があります。他にも似た英単語があるので見ていきましょう。
fake
英英辞典だと
an object that is made to look real or valuable in order to deceive people
『人々を欺くために本物や価値のあるものに見えるように作られたもの』
なので悪意のある『偽の』です。
He was charged with possessing a fake passport.
彼は偽のパスポートを所持していたことで告発された。
fake は名詞『偽物』でも使えます。
Experts revealed that the painting was a fake.
専門家はその絵画は偽物だと明らかにした。
Is the vase a genuine antique or a fake?

英英辞典だと
not real, but intended to seem real and deceive people
なので、false も fake とほぼ同じ意味で『偽の』です。
The man told us a false name and address.
その男は私達に偽の名前と住所を教えた。
『義歯』false tooth (teeth)や『つけまつ毛』false eyelashes にもこの false を使えます。
Jane uses false eyelashes.
ジェーンはつけまつ毛を使っている。
false には ‘untrue’『事実ではない』 ‘wrong’『 誤った』’not sincere’『不誠実な』 の意味もあります。
よく英語のリーディングで True / False questions がありますよね。
内容と合っていたら True 誤っていたら False で答えます。
The information was false.
その情報は誤りだった。
Your boyfriend is false.
あなたの彼氏は不誠実だわ。

not real or not made of natural things but made to be like something that is real or natural
なので、これは人をだますための『偽の』ではなく『人工の』となります。
Some ski resorts use huge amounts of artificial snow.
大量の人工雪を使うスキー場もある。

造花を買った。
