今回は『連休』の英語表現について。日本では祝日を月曜日にする３連休が増えました。さて英語で『三連休』は？
『連休』と言ってもさまざま。
☆ 土日を含む（つまり週末を含む）『３連休』
- a three-day weekend
I have a three-day weekend starting today.
今日から３連休だ。
Today is the middle day of the three-day weekend.
今日は３連休の真ん中だ。
Today is the last day of the three-day weekend.
今日は３連休の最終日だ。
※ なぜ days じゃないの？
three-day のように数字+名詞を形容詞として使う場合、名詞は複数形にしません。
この場合 three-day「３日間の」が weekend「週末」を修飾する形容詞になります。
a five-year-old girl「５歳の女の子」などもそうだね。
☆ 週末を含んでない３連休の場合（シフトで休みが続いたり、自分で休みを取ったり）
- a three-day holiday
Mari will take a three-day holiday in August.
マリは８月に３連休を取る。
Wow! We will have a 7-day holiday in Golden Week.
やった！ゴールデンウイークは７連休だ。
〇連休は数字を変えて使ってね。
- three days off in a row
I will take three days off in a row next week.
来週私は３連休取るよ。
※ in a row で「一列に、連続して」連休と分かる場合は不要。
※ row は「列」という意味でよく使われます。
I sat in the front row at the theater.
私は劇場の最前列に座った。（後列なら back row）
- three straight days off
He took three straight days off last week.
彼は先週３連休取った。
※ straight は「まっすぐな」だけじゃなく「連続した」の意味もあります。
いつもより長い休みだと、単に “long holiday” も使えます。
